White Paper: Our Action’s input to the EU Health Programme
We call for a joint European effort to address the urgent issue of mental disorders in young people.
An increasing number of young people in Europe are experience barriers to employment and social exclusion due to mental disorders. At the same time, there is insufficient research-based knowledge about which treatment is best suited for the individual young person. Stratification tools that could help clinicians deliver psychotherapy treatment tailored to the individual’s specific needs are lacking.
TREATme focuses on establishing a stronger knowledge base and contribute in research on personalized psychological treatment for young people. Funding for research projects that will develop and implement personalized psychotherapy for adolescents and young adults across Europe is, however, extremely scarce.
How can we achieve this goal?
This goal can be achieved through a joint European effort to bridge the gap between
psychotherapy research and everyday clinical practices in the prevention and treatment of
mental disorders in youth. Research shows that a range of psychotherapy modalities work
on average equally well. However, there is an urgent need for stratification methods that
will enable the clinician to apply the optimal modality for each individual patient. In other
words, we need to answer the question: what works for whom?
We call for a coordinated joint European effort to address this urgent question by providing funding opportunities for large-scale applied clinical research on individualized youth psychotherapy.
The COST Action TREATme, consists of 80 psychotherapy researchers from 29 different European countries who have all signed the White Paper. We represent a wide range of psychotherapeutic modalities and research methods.
